Virginia’s General Assembly meets in Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area

Virginia’s General Assembly met for a commemorative session at Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Capitol January, 26, 2008. Following the tradition begun 74 years ago with the first commemorative session, the General Assembly, the Justices of the Virginia Supreme Court, and members of the Virginia Congressional Delegation returned to the House of Burgesses to renew its inspiration and to strengthen its resolve to perpetuate the fundamental principles of free governments.

Colonial Williamsburg’s Colin Campbell offered the official welcome to Governor Timothy Kaine and the Assembly. Michael Beschloss, author and presidential historian, spoke about presidential leaders’ impact on America.

During the first session at the Capitol dedication ceremonies Feb. 24, 1934, the senators and delegates passed legislation enabling the General Assembly to hold future sessions at the Capitol “at times that might seem proper.” State lawmakers met two years ago at the historic Capitol for Gov. Kaine's inauguration.
